Nov. 3rd, 2002 10:48 pmCleveland was nice. I'd never been there, even though I've lived in Ohio all of my life. It was a BORING 3 1/2 hour drive up, Northern Ohio is very flat and farm land-y. As we got into suburban Cleveland, it began snowing! Ahh, the first snow of the season. At least it wasn't in Cincinnati. We got a little turned around getting off the highway downtown, because Mom DIDN'T do a reality check and the yahoo map had us turn left instead of right, and we ended up in a seedy warehouse area. But thanks to my fabulous navigation skills, we made it downtown. The hotel (Renaissance) is on Public Square, that's the street address. Unfortunetly, nowhere is there a street sign for Public Square. We only found it because another restaurant had its full address on its awning. We get into the hotel around 9:30 on Friday evening and WOW, it is NICE. Because we arrived so late, the only rooms available were on the Club Level! That's a special uber-swanky level of the hotel that you need to use your key to get there in the elevator. It had a lounge that served free breakfast in the mornings, free hors d'ourves in the afternoon, and free pastries in the evening. Woo hoo! We dumped our stuff in our room, and went down to the bar for a drink.
The next day we were up about 9, went to the lounge for free continental breakfast, and then took a cab to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. We arrived a little before they opened. They had a lot of huge, individually designed guitars outside, which reminded me a lot of the Big Pig Gig here in Cincinnati. The Hall of Fame is right on Lake Erie, which was beautiful but FREEZING. I had to check my camera inside, which disappointed me, but I understood. The Hall of Fame itself was nice. We spent about 4 hours there, prolly about 1 and 1/2 hours listening to songs at the music stations! I enjoyed the early-mid 90's features, such as Nirvana and Tori and Sarah McLachlan. Since I think the best music was around 93-96, I was fine with there not being a lot of new artists there. And I grew up on the folk-hippy oldies, so I enjoyed that too ^_^ There was a John Lennon exhibit there that took up two floors, it was very humbling. A lot of his original scribbles of songs.
We didn't have time to do the Science Museum, so we went to Tower City to hang out for a few hours (a big mall downtown, think Tower Place underground and bigger). Then we went to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. My family loves Hard Rock ^_^ I've been to 7 different ones, my mom to about 12 different ones. I started my own Hurricane Glass collection (my mom has about 15). Then we went back to the hotel and crashed early. I did my homework (whee).
I had trouble sleeping Saturday night...I slept from about 10pm to 3am. Then I was up. Mom got up about 7:30, we went to breakfast, then got on the road. We stopped in Columbus to have lunch with my dad at the Olive Garden. I wanted to try the new drink they had, Frozen Tiramisu! but stupid Ohio has a stupid no alcohol until 1pm on Sunday law. Then I rode home with Dad in his new car while Mom followed (he's coming home to vote, then going back up to Columbus).
So that was my weekend! Most Cleveland people were very nice and helpful (I'd heard that Cleveland people are rude) and the downtown was nice. It annoyed me that my mom told me Cincinnati was considered for the Hall of Fame location....we'd still be deciding where to put it. And then people would boycott it. And the religious right would protest it. *sigh* My town cannot get its act together.
Ah well. I have a test tomorrow, so I should get some sleep.
