Aug. 31st, 2002 01:40 pmThanks to
girlmusic for reminding me about the really good bands that Eric introduced to me. I would have never found them on my own, in my closed world of "folk chick rock!!" but they're really worth taking a listen to:
Bands Eric Introduced Me To That You Should Try
First, Jack of Jill. I am totally not into screaming hard music, but they are REALLY good, especially the last album, Clear Hearts Grey Flowers is just SO much better musically and lyrically, and has less screaming ;-) The other albums are good too, but I recommend CHGF for first timers. Strawberry Gashes and Fear of Dying are my personal anthems. "I'm not afraid of happy endings, I'm just afraid my life won't work that way"
Next, Snake River Conspiracy. A more techno sound, very rocking, good for driving. The female vocalist is great. Their cover of Lovesong is REALLY good. Other good songs to try are Breed and You and Your Friend.
Then, Cruxshadows. A techno band with Egyptian influence, the lead singers voice is gorgeous. I don't know any of their song names, but good albums are Mystery of the Whisper and Paradox Addendum
Following, Theatre of Tragedy. NEVER thought I would like this group. But the female leads voice is so haunting and melodic. Aegis is the best album (I don't really like their newest album). Good songs are Cassandra and Lorelai.
Lastly, Blackmore's Night. This is a band that no one should be surprised I like, it's just that he introduced them to me. Rennaisance music. ^_^ They are FANTASTIC. They have three CD's out, but I only have the first two. Be Mine Tonight is going to be my wedding song. ^_^
Can anyone suggest some other bands that are out of my "typical" type that I might like?

I had the pleasure of seeing them twice in the last few weeks, when they played Indy and Dayton. I hear they'll be back this fall. :)

Date: 2002-09-01 02:59 am (UTC)Hmm....... Other bands you might like...more darkwave: Lacuna Coil, Switchblade Symphony (their Serpentine Gallery album, the song "Bad Trash" in particular), Dead Can Dance (REALLY good.... check them out!). All these bands have beautiful female vocals.
And if you're feeling particularly adventurous, check out Current 93 (anything off their All the Pretty Little Horses CD) and Coil (anything off their Love's Secret Domain and Horse Rotovator CDs). Both these bands are.....um.....experimental? Electronic? Very, very British? Apocalyptic folk? Very hard to catagorize, regardless. Hit or miss, really.
I also happen to like VNV Nation (download their song "Darkangel", either the Gabriel or Azrael version, although I like the Azrael version better) and Jene Michel Jarre's Oxygene, a very beautiful techno album...very organic and soothing....great music to start the day to, or to meditate. It's one long piece, but divided into six tracts. Mindblowing stuff.
Um........other bands with female vocalists:
Qntal. They sing in German and some Latin, I think...Gothic hymns. Very, very beautiful, with all the power of church hymns. Think if the Vatican were all gothed out, heh. (: Their two albums are Qntal I and Qntal II.
Aria. With the self-titled albums Aria and Aria 2. The first is better. Much like Qntal, very hymnial-esque.
Moloko. You may like them... I have their Do You Like My Tight Sweater? CD. They have a song called "Killa Bunnies." Can't be all bad. ;)
And if you've never heard anything by Rasputina, good God, girl, what have you been listening to? Two chicks rocking out with cellos. I saw them live at the beginning of this summer and they were amazing to listen to. Check out anything from their How We Quit the Forest CD.
Hope this helps. And if you like any of them, lemme know so I can feel all cool and stuff. ;)
Hi you don't know me but...
