Vienna Teng in Louisville and Indianapolis
I recently had the pleasure of seeing Vienna Teng in Louisville on Wednesday, November 19th, and in Indianapolis on Thursday, November 20th. She performed beautifully both nights, and it was well worth a little exhaustion to go see her.
Wednesday
I left a little after noon, arriving in Louisville just before 2pm. The concert didn't start until 8pm, but I wanted to find a bookstore, and plop myself down and work on my NaNoWriMo novel. I scoped out the venue, so I would know where it was, and then set off to explore for a bookstore. I found a few malls, but no Barnes and Noble-type places. I looked in the white pages, and only one Barnes and Noble was listed for all of Louisville! Weird ;-p So I went back to the neighborhood of the concert venue and found a little cafe and spent about two hours there noshing and writing.
I entered the Rudyard Kipling, where Vienna was going to be performing, at 6:00pm, but they weren't ready to seat concert people yet, so I had a little dessert, and did some more writing. Finally and 7pm I saw them seat someone else, so I raced in to make sure I got a good seat. Other people had called to reserve the front row seats, but I did get a pretty good spot.
When people were still filing in, I recognized one couple at a table in the corner. Isn't that
mikewhy, renowned webmaster of The Dent (one of the BEST Tori Amos websites on the net)? I got up the courage to go over to him (he is on my friends list after all) and introduced myself to him and his girlfriend. So now that's one more LJ friend I can say I've met in RL ^_~ Very nice to meet you ^_~
Vienna was standing outside, taking her own cover when I went out to look at CD's. I needed a new one because I lost mine in the Great CD Perishing of Toronto '03. I told her this was my fourth copy, and she was impressed. But the happiest part was that she remembered me ^_^ She remembered my whole name, and where I was from. She said, "Someday I'll come to Cincinnati, I'll show up right at your door!" Her manager kept telling her she couldn't tour Cincy because she doesn't have any fans there, and she said she told him, "I have one!" So she was kind enough to sign the actual CD to me (my 4th autograph from her) and sign the liner for my sister. Yay ^_^ I got one of her stickers to put on my car.
The concert started at about 8:15. I don't remember the opening acts name. David something, I think. He was good enough. About half of the 30 person crowd was there to see him. He did an audience participation song, and NO ONE joined in (I did ;-p). So I could foresee that "Soon Love Soon" would not be on Vienna's set list tonight. About half-way through the guy's set, a jazz band started warming up in the other part of the restaurant. He made a joke, "Yeah, that's my back-up band, they're just warming up."
The club had brilliantly scheduled a nice, quiet pianist, and a loud jazz jam session on the same night. Separated by: A glass door. Which was constantly being opened by wait staff, and other miscellaneous people coming and going. It was incredibly distracting, and made it really hard to catch the tune of Vienna's songs sometimes. It's not at all Vienna's fault, but I felt bad for her, and based on the length of the two setlists, I think she probably cut Louisville short because of it.
Vienna came on right about 9:05. And about 9:15, Opening Act Boys fans started trickling out. HOW RUDE. *grumpy* I mean, I sat politely through his act. But at least they were quiet. But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Here is Vienna's setlist. I'm not going to explain the one's she played in Nashville, because I already explained those here. I will explain the new songs ^_^
Vienna Teng - 11/19/03 - Louisville - Rudyard Kipling
* denotes request
1. The Tower
2. Gravity
3. Mission St - Named after the street she used to live on, first written on her guitar. It was written in a bout of insomnia, because Mission St. was so active. She said we got the real ambient effects of the song, with the jazz band in the background, because there were two jazz bands on Mission St.
4. Eric's Song - she said this song has become a wedding song and one couple even wrote some of the lyrics in frosting.
5. *Daughter
6. Momentum
At this point she stopped and told us that she'd just gotten a phone call from her manager earlier today. He told her that a few nights ago he'd been about to get intimate with his girlfriend, when she'd put in a cd. It was Vienna's. He'd had to turn off the CD player because it was just too weird.
7. Lullaby for a Stormy Night
8. Harbor - About observing couples in the music business being apart, written two weeks before recording the album. I REALLY liked this song.
9. Boy at the Piano - Written when she was younger, a jazz song for a boy she used to like in high school who played jazz piano. He didn't notice her.
10. Homecoming
11. Enough to Go By
12. Unwritten Letter #1 - She said she's gotten some politely worded "hate mail" that she should have practiced more before attempting the Latin genre. whatEVER ;-p
13. Green Island Serenade
She said she was told that she's been saying "Thank you for coming" and waving in her sleep. (This was the 3rd to last stop on her tour).
It was wonderful to see her, but I did have to go to class the next day, so I just snuck out with a "See you tomorrow!"
Made it home in good time.
Thursday
Dragged my ass to class the next day, amazingly enough. My English teacher must have been sensing my "going on a road trip" vibes, because he let us out at 2pm instead of 2:25 (he NEVER lets us out early, and frequently keeps us over 5 minutes). I hit the road and made it to Indy a little before 4pm. Once again I scouted out the location first. Mapquest did one of it's famous "turn left" instead of "turn right" dealies at the very last moment, but thanks to my most excellent sense of direction, I did find it. The concert wasn't going to start until 8pm again, so I went north, to visit my grandmother.
My dad had given me directions this time. But Indianapolis tried to confuse me anyway. I eventually made it to the nursing home. My poor grandmother HATES her nursing home. She calls it a prison. Unfortunetly, her MIND is as sharp as yours and mine. Her body is pretty deteriorated. She is the ONLY one in the nursing home who has an outside job. Two days a week she goes to volunteer with elementary school students. She helps them with their reading. She was very surprised to see me, and we had a nice visit.
Then I was on my way again. I wanted to beat rush hour traffic. Back south to the venue. Had dinner at a REALLY fabulous little 50's diner. MUCH better than Johnny Rockets. Yummy. Was told by the club folks that they weren't open yet, so sat in my car and read for a little bit. When I saw someone else going in, I dashed in myself. Got to get the good seat! This time there were no reserved seats, so I got one front and center.
Again, there was a good-sized crowd there for the opening act, Emily Wood. She was good, but she only played four songs, which took about 15 minutes, and was then like, "Ok, thanks!" The club folks were like, "Um, you're supposed to play till 9pm." So she was pretty stumped, and kept going "Um....what can I do?" and then playing a song and then "Um..." and then playing a song. I don't know how that miscommunication happened, but you would think the club would have told her they needed her for an hour?
Now HERE'S where I get pissy. There's about 20 people there for Vienna and about 15 people there for Emily. EVERYONE is nice and quiet and respectful for Emily. But Emily's fans spend the ENTIRE TIME Vienna is on stage talking and laughing extremely loudly! It was very distracting. In fact, I was going to buy one of Emily's CD's until her friends acted so obnoxiously. The club was very long, they could have gone to the BACK if they wanted to talk, but no, they decided to stay at the front and be loud. I just think that's so crass.
Anyway, Vienna looked gorgeous tonight, and played beautifully. The acoustics were better here, and at least there was no jazz band. Here is her set list:
Vienna Teng - 11/20/03 - Indianapolis - Radio Radio

1. Gravity
2. Momentum
3. Homecoming
4. The Tower
5. Mission St
6. *Eric's Song
7. Cover: Cannonball by Damien Rice
8. *Between (requested by moi)
9. Harbor
10. *Drought
11. *Say Uncle
12. Soon Love Soon
13. Unwritten Letter #1
Encore 1: Lullaby For a Stormy Night
Encore 2: Green Island Serenade
When she was done, she just stepped to the side, and was immedietly surrounded by people. I just wanted to get a picture with her. She thanked me for coming again. I asked her what the single was going to be from her new album and she said they weren't sure yet, but it might be "Harbor."
On my way out, the people at the table next to me had noticed I was writing in my notebook during the show, and asked if I was keeping the setlist. I said I was and the gentleman asked if I would email it to him. He said he had been taping off the soundboard, and if I would send him the setlist, he would send me the recording of the show! Most excellent ^_^ So I hope that arrives soon.
Vienna is truely a joy to watch perform live. I love to watch her hands fly over the keys. I love to let her music wash over me. It's magical. I am so glad I went to see her both nights. Even the distractions are minor compared to the beauty of her music. If you haven't experienced Vienna Teng's music yet, you really must give it a try. There are mp3's you can download on her website.
