So I'm starting the South Beach Diet.

I didn't really plan to do this diet at all. [livejournal.com profile] carmenvitae just started it, but I didn't know much about it. Then I received a MyPoints email, and was offered 750 points to try it. So I said what the heck. I've bought a lot of new clothes recently that ALMOST fit, but that I still need to lose 10-15 more pounds to really fit into. So this will help me get over the plateau I've been in. I started 2003 at around 255 pounds and I'm down to 240, but I've been at 240 for several months. My eating in the last 2 months has been TERRIBLE. Stuffing my face, fatty foods, no portion control, buying from the vending machine. I want to get back into a good eating habit like I was at the beginning of the year.

However, I just bought I 4 pack of Drumstick ice cream cones this morning, and I'm prolly going to eat them tonight, since I can't have them on the SBD. Terrible, aren't I? In one breath I want to eat healthier, and in the next I admit to eating up a ton of calories and fat.

Oh well. The diet starts tomorrow. Ice cream tonight.

Sounds very similar to Atkins (and don't let that Newsweek article fool you; Atkins isn't about avoiding carbs. :P I hate misconceptions like that.). If it is, it's incredibly tough the first few days, then it gets easier.. and it will work. :) Carb control, IMO, is definitely leaning in the right direction.

Good luck! :D

What I liked about SBD, compared to Atkins, is that I can go back to brown breads and rice after the two week "Strict Phase."

Cutting out all bread alltogether I just could not do ^_^

Understandably so. I'm not sure I understand the science behind that (after reading two Atkins books), but I only skimmed over the walkthrough. :)

I get whole grains back as a last step. The only reason I can't have them now is because I know that if I were to have them now, I wouldn't be able to do portion control. At all. :( So this is a really good thing for me.

One thing I've learned about the controlled carb/glycemic index approach: Grapes and Potatoes are NOT your friends. Much as I love both. :( I'll get them back in the end, but the grapes - even in moderation - are more than I can handle. Potatoes.. they're so very high on the glycemic index, I'm just avoiding them.

I hope this is the right plan for you.. I know I've found my way. I've lost 20 pounds in the last 2 months, and I'm 5 pounds shy of my halfpoint goal. :) This will definitely be a change of lifestyle for me, as opposed to just a diet. And to me, it's worth it. :)

half of that stuff just sounds gross. i could deal witht the chicken breast, eggplant, salad, and the dessert, but i don't know about a lot of the rest of it.

do they offer suggestions if, say, you can't stand tuna and jello grosses you out? haha.

i think i'm best off trying to do this once i've moved out of my house, i think maybe i'll just try to cut out carbs for two weeks. that's the point, right?

Here is why I do could never follow this:

1) Can I have caffienated tea if I drop the milk and sugar substitute?

2) I can't deal with anything called Turkey Roll-Ups. I'm thinking, "What? Fruit Roll-Ups made out of turkey? ICK!"

3) LIQUID EGG SUBSTITUTE?

4) Celery with Laughing Cow Light Cheese *brain explodes*

To be honest, what with all the substituting, you might as well buy a Boost or Ensure drink and have that. It'd be cheaper and probably just as healthy.

I'd rather have actual, unprocessed foods than eating most of that.

If it works for you, that's fabulous. I just don't know if I could handle it. :)

Actually, the Laughing Cow Light Cheese is pretty good. It comes in little foil-wrapped wedges, and each little wedge is 1 Weight Watchers point (about 50 calories/not much fat), but it still has a nice spreadable texture like cream cheese does. It's very good on bagels, english muffins, etc. There's a French Onion flavor, some kind of herb-y chive-type flavor, and a plain. I've been thinking the plain mixed with a little cinnamon would be very good.

That's just a suggested menu, not a YOU MUST FOLLOW menu. Personally, I'm thinking breakfast will be eggs, snack will be celery. You can make up your own menus ;-p

*nuzzle* You know I was teasing. :) Well, kinda. I mean, I was exaggerating...but I still couldn't do it. ;)

I did the same thing, if it makes you feel any better. I ate a bunch of pasta salad and had some milk and like 5 snackwell's cookies the night before I started SBD. LOL
